The category of sleep has exploded on the retail shelves the last few years. Brands are designing products that appeal to our collective anxiety and restlessness, tapping into a growing demand for rest and relaxation. From “functional foods” that have a soothing effect on the body, to herbal supplements, sleep trackers and the endless trendy mattress options, sleep branding is a massively expanding market.

Sleep packaging is stirring with great design!

The sleep industry is estimated to be worth upwards of $40 billion in America alone. Package Design has played a significant role in creating a visual language of somnolence that is recognizable to consumers. Traditional sleep products, like oral supplements, are being re-framed as lifestyle choices, rather than medical needs. You can have a late night snack with a Effin’ Good Snacks, a calming Blue Lavender Latte’ from BLUME, or a hemp-based sleep supplement from Canaherb. With ingredients like passionflower, reishi mushroom extract, and the amino acid L-Theanine, brands are getting creative with their product formula’s.

Even PepsiCo has their version of sleep-friendly beverage. Driftwell, is PepsiCo’s “enhanced water beverage” that contains L-theanine and magnesium. Driftwell’s branding features an dreamy blue background and yellow accents, with an abstract moon dipping into a wave. With its sort of “quiet design”, Driftwell takes a modern and asymmetrical approach to package design.

The design of these products helps to create an emotional connection with consumers, while also validating the idea of spending more on better sleep. Overall, sleep has gone from being an undervalued necessity to a valuable industry, with products that are both effective and aesthetically pleasing.

Branding for sleep products

Branding and package design has to do some heavy lifting in order to reflect what the product is formulated to do, and if done well, drawing in the customer to feel those effects with design. As the market for sleep aids continues to expand, we can expect to see more and more great design!
